If you have thoughts of launching a flying club, the time to act is now. The experts at Chicago-area-based Ground Effect Advisors want to help you out, and they have more than words to offer. They’ve hit up AOPA for a $1,000 scholarship, seed money to help get your club up and running — into “ground effect” as it were. You take over the controls from there.

You need to apply for the scholarship by the end of this month, so go to www.startaflyingclub.com to fill out the forms. The winner will be announced on June 1, and will receive "Flight Plan," a handbook for starting a club; 20 hours' consultation services from Ground Effect Advisors; a document library of sample agreement forms; consultation on supporting web and social media services; and more.

Sponsors are also donating a pair of H10-13.4 headsets (David Clark); an aircraft exterior cleaning kit (Sporty’s Pilot Shop); 50 gallons of fuel (Signature Flight Support); an interior cleaning kit (Cirrus Aircraft); six months’ free scheduling service (Schedule Master); computerized ATC simulators (PilotEdge); a Bearcat ATC scanner (LiveATC); and 10 club logo shirts (Heading 370).

Ground Effect member Todd McClamroch, club member and 200-hour pilot said, “We started this to help others with what we’ve learned in our flying club, and we’ve been able to get support from AOPA and other members of the industry. Clubs can be a great way to finance your flying and build relationships with other pilots.”

Mark Phelps is a senior editor at AVweb. He is an instrument rated private pilot and former owner of a Grumman American AA1B and a V-tail Bonanza.
