First Issue Fly-By

A primer for your new FLYING magazine from the editor-in-chief

A dream fulfilled: that’s what I felt when I opened up FLYING’s pages for my first look at the new book. Its substance gives it gravitas that translates well into the stories you’ll find inside.

And now that I’ve made my first low pass, I want to share a fly-by with you.

The Opening

Beyond the table of contents, the first image you’ll see is a photo spread of a classic fighter in flight—we’ve packed more visual candy in FLYING to entice you in.

We’ve put our contributors front and center, and we’ll feature new faces as they join the FLYING team throughout the year.

You’ll see old friends and make new ones.

Warm Up Your Engines

Next, we dive into favorite series you’ve used through the years to engage the pilot brain—the stories of “I Learned About Flying From That,” or I.L.A.F.F.T., and Chart Wise, a deep dive into an instrument approach.

Next, we aim to inspire you with a conversation with a pilot using aviation in a unique way—and get you primed for the deep well of stories to come.

Into the Cockpit

For the heart of the book, we want to give you a range of reading experiences that match the flying enthusiasms and dreams of our readers.

In this first issue, we take you into the world of STOL—short takeoff and landing events that have taken general aviation by storm and enticed young pilots to our ranks.

We unpack the layers at Garmin: What lies behind those ubiquitous black boxes in your panel?

We touch upon classic aviation with a primer on buying a Luscombe 8-series taildragger—and the jet life with a preview of the new HondaJet 2600 concept.

We land you at airports you’ve only watched on YouTube—perhaps—Courchevel and Méribel, in France. Are they on your bucket list?

Our expert instructors give you tips on winter weather flying—and then take you on a walk back through FLYING’s decades showcasing aviation since its golden age.

Voices of FLYING

We know you love those aviation authors you’ve followed through the years—because you’ve written, emailed, commented, and called us about them.

So we’re thrilled to feature those voices in each issue of FLYING as well as in a community online, Voices of Flying.

The printed book allows you to curl up and enjoy the humor and wisdom of Peter Garrison, Dick Karl, Les Abend, Martha Lunken, Ben Younger, Sam Weigel, and a new voice, Michael Wildes.

We finish on a happy note—reaching back into the wide world of aviation for a unique snippet to share.

And we hope you’re already looking forward to the next issue.
