Key Takeaways:

  • Workhorse's SureFly two-seat electric hybrid helicopter had its planned maiden flight at CES canceled due to adverse weather, despite recently receiving an experimental FAA certificate.
  • The SureFly octocopter, priced at $200,000 and aiming for full FAA certification by late next year, features a gasoline engine driving electric motors, battery backup, and a ballistic parachute system.
  • Workhorse has created a new public aviation division, SureFly Inc., to manage its aerial technologies like the SureFly, allowing the parent company to focus on its core commercial transportation business.

Ohio-based Workhorse planned a spectacular way to open the first day of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, when the company intended to fly its two-seat SureFly electric hybrid helicopter for the first time. Unfortunately the weather in Vegas didn’t cooperate and the maiden flight was scrubbed.
