AOPA Introduces John Kounis Scholarship

New scholarship honors aviation editor.

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association has launched a new scholarship to honor John Kounis, the editor and cofounder of Pilot Getaways, who died suddenly in his home in Glendale, California, on July 13.

The John Kounis Flight Training Scholarship is a part of AOPA’s Flight Training Scholarship program, which launched in 2011 to help student pilots with the cost of learning to fly. The program is a part of AOPA’s Flight Training Student Retention Initiative, which aims to grow the pilot population. This year, AOPA will award 25 scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $12,000.

Applications for this year’s scholarships are due on August 9 and winners will be announced on October 2. The eligibility requirements for applicants are very open. Basically any U.S. citizen or permanent resident over the age of 16 who has a passion for aviation is qualified.

The first John Kounis Flight Training Scholarship will be awarded in 2016. You can contribute to the scholarship by clicking this link. While not clearly obvious, a key code in the link directs the funds to the Kounis scholarship.
