With an increasing number of UAS incidents including several reports of close calls with airplanes, the UAS industry has worked with the FAA to come up with a campaign that sheds some light on how drone operations can and should be conducted in order maximize safety in the sky. Named “Know Before You Fly,” the campaign was spearheaded by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) and the Small UAV Coalition.
The timing of the campaign over the Christmas holiday was no coincidence since light unmanned aircraft have become popular gifts. “The ‘Know Before You Fly’ campaign fills a critical education gap just in time for the holiday season,” said Michael Toscano, president and CEO of AUVSI. ” We want to ensure that all prospective operators have the tools they need to fly safely and responsibly.”
The Know Before You Fly campaign breaks down operational guidelines for three categories of use: recreational, business and public entities. The information is clear and concise, and it includes links to FAA regulations and recommendations for those who want to delve deeper.
