Dual Electronics' XGPS170 combination GPS/ADS-B receiver is now compatible with WSI's Pilotbrief Optima iPad app. WSI's app, available through the Apple iTunes store or at wsi.com/pilotbrief, provides what the company describes as "professional-grade weather services at a private pilot price." It also incorporates charts and flight-planning software. Adding ADS-B via the Bluetooth connection on the Dual XGPS170 gives pilots continuous weather information in the cockpit for strategic flight planning and decision making after takeoff.
Dual’s top-of-the-line XGPS170 is compatible with a growing range of tablet apps, including Bendix/King’s My WingMan and Hilton Software’s WingX Pro 7. It has a WAAS GPS receiver and an ADS-B receiver feeding weather and traffic data via Bluetooth. It can connect with two tablets simultaneously, allowing the tablets to link with other Bluetooth devices in the cockpit. The built-in rechargeable battery typically lasts for about five hours, or the unit can be driven by ship’s power through its 12/28-volt charger (included).
Dual’s Joanna Lukins reports that the unit was a huge success at EAA AirVenture last month, and they sold out of the first batch within two days. Two more shipments were required to meet customer demand. She said, “We also heard from many pilots how much they liked using the unit and the fact that it is not tied to one app. We do realize that many pilots are still not working with the iPad/tablet, and they are still researching this solution. There is still a lot of confusion out there, and a lot has to be done on our end in terms of educating consumers.”
The Dual XGPS170 retails for $699. Visit gps.dualav.com for more information and a list of dealers.
