Dual Electronics’ XGPS170 combination GPS/ADS-B receiver is now compatible with WSI’s Pilotbrief Optima iPad app. WSI’s app, available through the Apple iTunes store or at wsi.com/pilotbrief, provides what the company describes as “professional-grade weather services at a private pilot price.” It also incorporates charts and flight-planning software. Adding ADS-B via the Bluetooth connection on the Dual XGPS170 gives pilots continuous weather information in the cockpit for strategic flight planning and decision making after takeoff.
Dual’s top-of-the-line XGPS170 is compatible with a growing range of tablet apps, including Bendix/King’s My WingMan and Hilton Software’s WingX Pro 7. It has a WAAS GPS receiver and an ADS-B receiver feeding weather and traffic data via Bluetooth. It can connect with two tablets simultaneously, allowing the tablets to link with other Bluetooth devices in the cockpit. The built-in rechargeable battery typically lasts for about five hours, or the unit can be driven by ship’s power through its 12/28-volt charger (included).
