At about 1030 Alaska time, the airplane sustained substantial damage during an aborted landing. Neither the certificated flight instructor (CFI) nor the student pilot were injured. Visual conditions prevailed. According to the CFI, during the accident landing, the student allowed the airplane to bounce slightly and, as the main wheels touched down again, the airplane veered to the left. The CFI took control of the airplane in an attempt to realign it, but it continued to veer to the left.

February 2, 2008, Mukilteo, Wash., Bellanca 17-30A

The airplane was substantially damaged when it collided with a power line at about 1240 Pacific time during an attempted forced landing. The commercial pilot and sole occupant received serious injuries. Visual conditions prevailed. According to the pilot, who talked briefly with rescuers before being taken to the hospital, the airplanes engine lost all power while he was in the pattern for a touch-and-go landing. He then attempted to glide to the approach end of the runway, but was unable to maintain enough altitude to clear a power line. After hitting the power line, the airplane rolled to a steep angle of bank, and then descended into the terrain.

September 15, 2007, Dallas, Ga., Bellanca 17-30A

The airplane was substantially damaged during a forced landing about 1445 Eastern time after it experienced a loss of engine power while in cruise flight. The private pilot and sole occupant was fatally injured. Visual conditions prevailed. The accident flight was the first for the airplane in two years. Earlier, the accident pilot attempted a takeoff. The airplane became airborne momentarily; however, the pilot aborted the takeoff, because he felt the engine “miss.” The owner and accident pilot subsequently sumped the fuel tanks and discovered water in all four of them. After draining the fuel system, the accident pilot again took off.

At about 1139 Pacific time, the airplane collided with terrain, fatally injuring the pilot. Visual conditions prevailed. According to a witness, the airplane appeared to be doing aerobatics. He saw it complete a loop and began a second one. The airplane appeared to be fighting the wind and moving very slowly. The airplane then came down, completing the second loop. The airplane then went back up into a third loop and came straight down, out of sight, and into the trees. Another witness stated the airplane appeared to stall and descend in a tailspin….

At approximately 1100 Central time the tail-wheel equipped airplane was substantially damaged when it collided with a bale of hay at the Hearne (Texas) Municipal Airport. The Commercial pilot was not injured; the passenger sustained minor injuries. Instrument conditions prevailed; no flight plan had been filed. The pilot later reported that he made a 180-degree turn after landing on Runway 36 and was taxiing to the main ramp at a speed of approximately 30 knots with quartering eight-knot tailwind. At 1004 central time, a Bellanca 17-30A crashed shortly after takeoff from runway 15 at Addison Airport, killing the pilot and passenger. Four minutes after the flight departed IFR for Amarillo the pilot reported he had lost his panel. The aircraft crashed into two houses, destroying them in the ensuing fire. No one on the ground was injured. Weather at the time of takeoff included a ceiling of 100 feet overcast, temperature and dewpoint at 17 degrees C, visibility of 7/8ths of a mile….

At 0854 central time, a Bellanca 14-13-2 was damaged when it landed short of runway 23 at Quad City International Airport. The pilot was not injured. The pilot said he departed Moline for Brodhead, Wisc., but the oil pressure began fluctuating. He decided to return to Moline. At 1115 Pacific time, a Bellanca 14-19 lost engine power when making a missed approach at the Napa County Airport and was ditched in San Pablo Bay. The pilot was not injured. The flight departed the Camarillo, Calif., at 0730 that morning and had diverted to Angwin during a period when Napa was below approach minimums. The flight departed Angwin at 1020 on an instrument clearance to Napa. The pilot said he departed Camarillo with full tanks, which gave him four hours of flight time plus a 45-minute reserve. At 16:50 PDT, a Bellanca 7KCAB crashed after the pilot lost control during practice aerobatic maneuvers. The pilot bailed out and sustained minor injuries. The pilot said he climbed to 6,000 feet and entered a left upright spin. After two turns, he initiated a forward movement of the stick to recover and found that the stick was jammed in the full aft position. He looked in the rear seat area and discovered that the rear seat back cushion had fallen forward, looped over the stick, and was holding it in place. Following unsuccessful attempts to recover, the pilot abandoned the airplane….
