Sept. 19, Atlanta, Kan. / Bellanca Super Decathlon

At 18:00 CDT, a Bellanca 8KCAB Super Decathlon crashed near Atlanta, killing the pilot and seriously injuring the passenger. A witness said the pilot performed a loop, immelman, a couple of hammerhead stalls and a couple of rolls and returned to the airport. The witness said that the airplane then approached from the north in what I call a crop duster pass. Nov. 10, Creede, Colo. / Bellanca Super Viking

At approximately 15:20 MST, a Bellanca 17-30 disappeared from radar near Creede. The pilot and his passenger are presumed dead. The meteorological conditions are unknown. The flight originated from Colorado Springs about 50 minutes earlier, but no flight plan was filed. Family members said the flight was headed to Las Vegas. The last radar contact of what is believed to be the missing airplane showed an altitude of 14,700 feet msl. It has not been determined if the airplane was equipped with supplemental oxygen….

Nov. 9, Canandaigua, N.Y. / Bellanca Super Viking

At about 15:00 EST, a Bellanca 17-30A made a forced landing at the Canandaigua Airport. The pilot suffered minor injuries. The pilot told investigators he lifted off about three-quarters of the way down Runway 31. At about 65 feet above the runway, the pilot raised the landing gear and the engine quit. The pilot lowered the nose and attempted to land on the remaining runway. The airplane touched down, bounced back into the air, and then floated over a road located at the end of the runway and landed in a plowed field. The FAA inspector noted that the airplane had not been inspected for 2 years before the accident and has had a history of fuel contamination problems….

March 18, Erwinna, Pa. / Bellanca Decathlon and Piper Pawnee

At 11:10 EST, a Bellanca 8KCAB and a Piper PA-25 collided in midair and crashed at Vansant Airport. The two occupants in the Bellanca and the pilot of the Piper suffered minor injuries. The flight instructor in the Decathlon said they were in the traffic pattern for several minutes and were on the fourth approach to Runway 7 and about 50 feet agl at the time of the accident. He said: We were on final and [the private pilot] started to pull the nose up to stretch his glide. I told him, Dont do that. Lower the nose and add power. At 21:05 CDT, a Bellanca 7ECA was damaged while landing at Arlington Municipal Airport. The student pilot was not injured. The owner said the pilot, who was an A&P mechanic, was authorized to taxi the airplane following maintenance but decided to fly the airplane once around the traffic pattern. Feb. 7, Sylmar, Calif. / Questair Venture and Bellanca Super Decathlon

At 09:50 PST, an amateur-built Questair Venture and a Bellanca 8GCBC collided near Sylmar, The Questair was maneuvering to land at Van Nuys, and the Bellanca was operating as a pipeline patrol flight and was orbiting over a construction site near the point of the collision. Both aircraft were in contact with the Van Nuys Air Traffic Control Tower. The pilot and passenger on each plane were killed. The Bellanca pilot contacted the Van Nuys control tower at 09:42, saying, Newhall Pass. Well be here for about five minutes. At 16:36 eastern time, the pilot of a Bellanca 7ECA lost control and crashed while making a forced landing after losing engine power during initial climb from runway 36 at Westfield Airport. The pilot was killed and the passenger was seriously injured. Witnesses said the aircraft was in a shallow, slow climb when it crossed the departure end of runway 36. At about 150 feet, the engine stopped. The airplane began to turn left and apparently stalled. Examination of the aircraft revealed that the scat-ducting that provided air to the heat-muff was obstructed by two pieces of foam that were inserted into the inlets located on the lower engine cowl….

At about 15:20 eastern time, a Bellanca 17-30A lost power and crashed while attempting a forced landing near Albany. The pilot and check pilot were seriously injured. The flight had originated from Albany about five minutes earlier. The pilot stated that he was receiving a biennial flight review and that he was currently out of biennial flight review. All fuel tanks were full at departure. He said that, while climbing through 2,000 feet, he switched the fuel selector from the left main tank to the right auxiliary tank and the engine immediately quit. At 20:30 eastern time, a Bellanca 7KCAB lost engine power in cruise flight and was damaged during a forced landing on a road in Hudson. The pilot reported no injuries. The flight originated in Rochester, Wisc., and was en route to Wilmington, Del. The pilot said the airplane had just had new wings installed at the American Champion Aircraft Co. and he was taking the airplane to Delaware. The airplane lost power and he landed on a road, but a wheel went into a pothole and the right main landing gear was pushed aft. Examination showed the right fuel tank was empty and the left tank was full. The airplane is equipped with only an on/off fuel selector. The two fuel pickup ports in the left fuel…
