March 20, Stanford, Calif. / Cessna 172RG

At 15:00 Pacific time, a Cessna 172RG lost engine power and made an emergency landing in a dirt field in Stanford, coming to rest inverted. The flight instructor and pilot/student were not injured. The instructor said they were about 2,000 feet msl when he noted a loss of oil pressure. At 1,600 feet the engine stopped. He set up for the emergency landing on a side road but a truck entered the road, and he had to maneuver the airplane onto an open field. Investigators found the oil had been changed the day before the accident and the oil filter had not been tightened or safety-wired to the engine. February 06, Platter, Okla. / Cessna 152 and Cessna 172

At approximately 17:45 central time, a Cessna 152 and a Cessna 172P collided in flight near Platter. The flight instructor and student in the 152 were killed. The 172 landed without further incident and the two occupants were uninjured. The pilot of the 172 said he was in cruise flight at 3,500 feet when he felt a thud near the rear of the airplane. He then felt air coming into the cabin from the left door and recognized that the airplane required excessive right rudder to maintain directional control. Nov. 10, Corning, N.Y. / Cessna 152 and Cessna 172

At 17:00 eastern time, a Cessna 152 struck a parked Cessna 172 during landing rollout at Corning-Painted Post Airport. Both aircraft sustained substantial damage. Neither occupant of the 152 was injured. The flight instructor said he landed on runway 31 and planned for a long rollout so the student could practice taxiing. During the rollout, the student pressed the left brake, and the airplane veered off the left side of the runway, striking the parked Cessna. The left wing of the Cessna 152 impacted the left strut of the Cessna 172. The Cessna 152 rotated to the left, and its propeller then sliced through the empennage of the Cessna 172 and came to a stop….

At 1730 central time, a Cessna 172P crashed while trying to land at Ferguson Airport. The pilot and passenger were not injured. The pilot reportedly attempted several approaches to runway 18 without landing, then stalled over the runway on his final attempt. Winds at the time were reported from 330 degrees at 12 knots….

July 1, 2012, Greene, N.Y., Cessna R172K Cutlass RG

At about 1530 Eastern time, the airplane experienced a hard forced landing. Visual conditions prevailed. The airplane sustained substantial damage. The solo private pilot was not injured.While en route, the engine began to run rough, followed by a loss of power. Because he was unable to maintain altitude, the pilot elected to land downwind and touched down about midpoint of the runway. The nose landing gear contacted the runway surface hard. The No. 3 cylinder assembly was circumferentially fractured, separating the barrel and head. There also was structural damage to the engine firewall.

January 5, 2008, Spotsylvania, Va., Cessna R172K

The airplane was substantially damaged when it collided with a fence and trees during a forced landing at 1545 Eastern time. Visual conditions prevailed. The private pilot reported minor injuries. The pilot later stated he was in cruise flight at 5000 feet when the engine started to run a little rough. A short time later he smelled fuel. He opened air vents but the smell persisted. After querying ATC on the nearest airports location, the pilot observed an open field and initiated a forced landing to the field. The engine stopped less than a minute after he informed ATC that he needed to land. The airplane touched down in the field, went through a fence, collided with trees and came to a complete stop.
