July 3, Kutztown, Pa. / Cessna 172

At about 11:30 eastern time, a Cessna 172H was damaged during landing at the Kutztown Airport, but neither the flight instructor nor student pilot were injured. The student pilot said he had accumulated 40-50 hours over the past five years, with the last flight being about a year ago. The instructor said the student pilot made the first landing on the numbers then came around the pattern for another landing. During the second approach, the airplane was high, so the student selected full flaps. At approximately 21:45 mountain time, a Cessna 172K crashed when it struck the water during takeoff from a beach near Orchard. The pilot was not injured. The flight originated at Greeley, Colo., at approximately 18:30. The pilot said extensive maintenance had been performed on the airplane and on two different occasions he had made off-airport precautionary landings due to smoke in the cockpit. In the first incident, wiring inside the transponder had burned. In the second incident, unsecured wires had chafed against a bus bar and short-circuited. At 08:15 eastern time, a Cessna 172N ditched in the Atlantic Ocean 35 miles east of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., following a loss of engine power. All four occupants escaped without injury. The pilot said the flight departed the Bahamas and he climbed to a cruise altitude of 6,500 feet. At about 14:15 eastern time, a Cessna 172M was damaged when it encountered wake turbulence from a Boeing 757-200, operated by the US Air Force, about 4 miles south of Andrews Air Force Base. The pilot was not injured. The pilot said he was cruising from Cambridge, Md., to Friendly, Md., and was passing south of Andrews AFB. Both airplanes were advised of each other and the pilot of the Cessna was given a wake turbulence advisory. At about 08:10 eastern time, a Cessna 172M overran the runway and crashed when it turned back toward the airport after losing power on initial climb from Ohio State University Airport. The pilot received minor injuries. The pilot said he drained the sumps and found no water, then took off from runway 9R. When the airplane was about 500 feet above the ground, the engine started to sputter and then lost power. The pilot turned to land on runway 27R but overran the runway and crashed into a fence 500 feet beyond the end of the runway. No water was found in the tanks after the crash. At about 19:00 eastern time, a Cessna 172N crashed and burned after takeoff from Danbury Municipal Airport. The pilot suffered minor injuries. The pilot said the fuel tanks were full and free from contamination. She said she started the engine with the fuel selector positioned to the left wing fuel tank and switched to the right wing fuel tank just prior to taxi. She performed an engine run-up which included a check of the carburetor heat system and then taxied to runway 26. After the run-up she switched the fuel selector to the both position. At approximately 14:45 Pacific time, a Cessna 172N overran runway 35 and struck trees following an aborted takeoff at the Siletz Bay State Airport. The pilot sustained minor injuries. The flight was to have been a brief local evaluation of weather conditions before departing for Salem, Ore. The pilot said he decided to evaluate the weather conditions around the airport before departing with his wife and two children back to Salem. He taxied out to runway 35 but did not complete the Before Takeoff checklist prior to initiating his takeoff roll. At 17:10 central time, a Cessna 150E and a Cessna 172N collided in cruise flight near Katy. The pilot of the 150 was killed and the two occupants of the 172 were uninjured. Both airplanes were on VFR cross-country flights without flight plans. The pilot of the 172 said the airplane was in level flight at 2,000 feet approximately 10 miles west of the West Houston Airport when she dialed in the CTAF to make a position report. She said she was scanning the area when she noticed an airplane approaching her airplane from the left side at a 90-degree angle. June 9, West Milford, N.J. / Cessna 172

At about 11:20 eastern time, a Cessna 172R lost power while landing at Greenwood Lake Airport and crashed -mile from the runway. The CFI and commercial pilot sustained minor injuries. The flight had originated at White Plains, N.Y., and had entered the traffic pattern for landing at Greenwood Lake. While on the base leg at 800 to 900 feet agl and with power set at 1,900 rpm, the pilot tried to apply power but the engine did not respond. No pre-impact anomalies were found and the engine was successfully run after the accident.
