At about 10:59 EDT, the pilot of a Cessna 172RG lost control on landing at Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport. Neither the pilot nor the passenger were injured. The pilot said that, as he climbed through 500 feet, the airplane made an uncommanded yaw to the left and the turn coordinator indicated a skid to the left. He returned for landing and, while trying to use the manual rudder trim, noted that the trim wheel spun freely. While on short final approach, the tower advised him to go around because the landing gear was not extended. Dec. 12, Springhill, La. / Cessna 172

At 12:30 CST, a Cessna 172N struck trees while maneuvering near Springhill. The pilot received minor injuries. IMC prevailed at the time of the accident. The pilot said he had been hunting deer on his property earlier that morning and had wounded a deer. He decided to search for the wounded deer using his airplane. He was flying over his property at 300 feet agl with 10 degrees of flaps extended when the airplane struck two oak trees. A weather observation facility 33 miles away reported the wind from 010 at 11 knots, 1.5 miles visibility in heavy rain showers and mist, overcast ceilings at 300 feet agl, temperature 50 degrees and dewpoint 48 degrees….

At about 14:28 EDT, a Cessna 172RG crashed on landing at Orlando Executive Airport following a loss of electrical power. No one was injured. The instructor and student pilot were not injured. The flight had left St. Petersburg about 50 minutes earlier. The instructor said that shortly after takeoff the airplane showed signs of electrical problems but he thought he was only having radio problems and continued the flight in accordance with established NORDO procedures. At about 14:50 EST, a Cessna 172P and a Cessna 172R collided in flight on approach to Fitchburg Municipal Airport. The pilot of the 172P was killed and the student pilot in the 172R suffered serious injuries. According to several witnesses, the airplanes were on the final approach segment to the airport when the student pilots airplane overtook the private pilots airplane and struck it on the right side. At 12:00 PDT, the pilot of a Cessna 172N lost control after encountering wind shear while landing at the Nut Tree Airport. No one was injured. The pilot took off from Palo Alto at about 11:15 and was enroute to Vacaville. The pilot said he encountered continuous light to moderate turbulence along his route of flight and that the final approach was very bumpy. At 18:00 CST, a Cessna 172L was damaged when it struck a sea wall and hangar during engine start at Lakefront Airport. The pilot, who hand propped the engine, was not injured. The pilot said the starter would not engage properly, so he turned off the ignition, put the keys in his pocket, pulled the throttle to the off position, set the parking brake and got out of the airplane. At 12:48 MDT, a Cessna 172R struck rising terrain at Independence Pass near Aspen. The pilot was killed and the two passengers were seriously injured. The airplane took off from Aspen and climbed toward the pass. A witness said the aircraft was flying slowly with a nose-high attitude when it struck terrain. The accident site was at 11,948 feet msl in a narrow valley. Density altitude at the site was calculated to be 14,100 feet msl at the time….

Oct. 23, Wenatchee, Wash. / Cessna 172P and Vans RV-6A

At 13:20 PDT, a Cessna 172P and an RV-6A collided in mid-air about six miles east of Pangborn Memorial Airport. Both aircraft received minor damage but the two occupants of the Cessna and the pilot of the RV-6A were uninjured. The Cessna had departed from Wenatchee about one hour prior to the collision for the local instructional flight and the RV-6A had just taken off from Wenatchee. The Cessna was on the VOR-A approach to Wenatchee, inbound on the 285 degree radial and near the final approach fix. At about 18:45 EST, a Cessna 172L was damaged while taxiing after landing at Wayne County Airport. No one was injured. The pilot said the airplanes landing light had burned out.
