At 09:30 CDT, a Cessna 172D suffered a hard landing following an aborted takeoff from a grass airstrip near Jonesboro. The four people aboard were not injured. The pilot reported that she had planned a local orientation flight for three EAA Young Eagles. The pilot said the takeoff roll was slightly longer than expected and that, at approximately 20 to 25 feet agl, she became concerned that the airplane might not be able to clear the power lines at the departure end of the airstrip. At 12:30 PDT, a Cessna 172 crashed on takeoff from a county road 22 miles west of Needles. The pilot and one passenger suffered minor injuries. Witnesses reported that the pilot landed the aircraft on Goffs Road and taxied near an automotive service station. The pilot told the service station attendant that he was en route to Bullhead City and was unsure if he had sufficient fuel aboard. He purchased five gallons of automotive gasoline in a container, carried it to the aircraft and poured it in the right wing tank. At 22:20 PDT, a Cessna 172M suffered electrical failure and made a forced landing in a parking lot at MCAS Miramar. The rented aircraft was substantially damaged and the pilot was seriously injured. The pilot had left Montgomery Field in San Diego, intending to fly a VOR-A approach into Oceanside, proceed to McClellan-Palomar, then return to Montgomery. He received a clearance to execute the approach at Oceanside, then informed the controller he had lost his VOR and would remain VFR and return to Montgomery for landing. At approximately 0930 Pacific time, a Cessna 172N struck power lines and crashed near Otis, killing the pilot and passenger. Witnesses said the airplane was cruising low over the Salmon Creek inlet when it executed an abrupt climbing left turn as it approached power lines spanning the creek. The power lines were suspended about 60 feet high. The airplane then crashed on a sandbar exposed by low tide….

At about 1340 Alaska time, a Cessna 172 collided with a Piper PA-31-350 at Fairbanks International Airport. No one was injured. The Cessna was taxiing for takeoff and the Piper was taxiing to parking. The pilot of the Cessna said he was taxiing northbound on Delta to runway 19L. At 1202 central time, a Cessna 172 overran the runway at Denton Municipal Airport and struck localizer antennae. The pilot suffered minor injuries and the passenger was killed. The 2,000-hour pilot said he was distracted by an airplane taking off, bounced twice and didnt touch down until only about 270 feet remained on the 6,000-foot runway. At approximately 16:50 PDT, a Cessna 172P made a forced landing in a field following a loss of power on climbout, seriously injuring the student pilot. The pilot was practicing touch-and-goes at the Auburn airport when, after the third touch-and-go, he noticed a reduction in RPM at 200 feet. During a test run after the accident, investigators could only get the engine to operate at a maximum of 1,700 to 1,800 RPM and it ran very rough. Compression tests showed no compression on the number 1 cylinder and the intake valve was found mechanically blocked open. Total time on the engine was 2,260 hours and it had not been overhauled since new. Recommended TBO on the engine is 2,000 hours….
