At 1131 Eastern time, the airplane was substantially damaged after a total loss of engine power on initial takeoff climb. Visual conditions prevailed; the Commercial pilot reported serious injuries. The accident flight was the first after completing an annual inspection. When they arrived at the airport, the two co-owners noticed the left wing was lower than the right wing and fuel was draining out of the fuel vent. The airplane experienced a failure of the crankshaft and separation of the propeller and propeller flange shortly after takeoff at about 1258 Eastern time. Visual conditions prevailed. The airplane was not damaged and the Commercial pilot was not injured. The pilot stated that he was ferrying the airplane; another pilot had performed a precautionary landing the day before after experiencing a rough-running engine. As the pilot approached the runway, the visual approach slope indicator showed that the airplane was on a proper glidepath. During the landing, the airplane encountered ground effect and floated down the runway. The pilot contemplated aborting the landing, but subsequently elected to continue. The airplane collided with power lines, impacted a roadway and came to rest inverted at about 1300 Pacific time. The Flight Instructor and Student pilot sustained minor injuries; the airplane was substantially damaged. Visual conditions prevailed. The instructor later stated that while on short final to land, she was flying the airplane with the student holding the controls lightly to feel the movement. February 8, 2006, El Cajon, Calif. / Cessna 172RG and Cessna 182Q

The two aircraft collided in flight approximately three miles south of the Gillespie Field Airport at 1642 Pacific time. Both aircraft were destroyed in the collision sequence and post-impact fires. The CFI and pilot undergoing instruction in the Cessna 172RG and the Private pilot/sole occupant of the Cessna 182Q were fatally injured.
