The FAA's impending full integration of drones into U.S. airspace is driving a significant shift in pilot training, with educational institutions adapting to meet the growing demand for drone professionals.
Retired Air Force colonel Jerry LeMieux is establishing the Unmanned Vehicle University, aiming to be the first school exclusively dedicated to training drone designers, operators, and support personnel.
Beyond this specialized university, many other colleges are developing programs, offering degrees for drone pilots, design, operations, and exploring the ethical questions and future roles of UAVs.
This expansion in drone education anticipates the FAA's prediction of 10,000 civilian drones operating in the U.S. within five years.
As the FAA prepares to fully integrate drones into American airspace over the next few years, a growing number of schools are also prepping for the change that influx will bring to the country’s pilot training landscape.
Several universities have already staked their claim in the drone arena, with dozens approved as authorized UAV launch sites.
