Awhile back we got a note from a reader based at Denver Centennial. He was concerned about a speed restriction on their ILS Runway 35R. We did a little digging and found that the FAA had already concluded this wasnt such a good idea and removed the restriction. However, this still makes good fodder for these pages, so lets take a closer look.
The PUFFR ONE is an RNAV arrival procedure for Denver Centennial's ILS 35R, primarily designed for high-speed jet aircraft to efficiently guide them with pre-defined altitude and speed restrictions, thereby reducing ATC workload.
This arrival seamlessly integrates with the ILS 35R approach at the Intermediate Fix (FIRPI), where specific altitude (9000 ft) and speed (210 KIAS) restrictions apply to ensure a structured transition.
While fast jets cleared for the PUFFR ONE adhere to these specific restrictions, slower aircraft typically receive radar vectors to the ILS, often bypassing the FIRPI constraints.
Pilots flying these procedures must understand and meticulously follow complex, fix-specific altitude and speed requirements, with "descend via" clearances being crucial for vertical navigation.
