Alternate missed approach procedures are backup plans, not depicted on standard charts to avoid pilot confusion, established when the final approach and missed approach navaids differ or requested by ATC.
They serve to mitigate the risk of IFR approaches or airports becoming unavailable if a navaid critical only to the primary missed approach fails, especially for conventional procedures like ILS approaches.
Pilots receive these alternate instructions via FDC NOTAMs or verbally from ATC and must be aware that GPS systems will not recognize or guide them through these undisclosed procedures.
