Identify Triggers Before You Leave the Ground

Pilots must know when they need to make a decision and what the options are.

Key Takeaways:

  • The core principle for pilots is to "act, don't react," meaning to take a moment to assess situations and make deliberate decisions rather than impulsive ones.
  • Effective decision-making involves thorough information analysis, preparing for contingencies, and anticipating "what if" scenarios, such as planning for diversions.
  • Pilots should establish personal minimums, identify decision triggers before flight, and actively guard against "continuation bias" to avoid pressing on when conditions become unsafe.

Act, don’t react.

This is a phrase one of my aviation mentors taught me at the beginning of my flying career. He alluded to an old style mechanical watch he was issued when he attended command school.
