Refresh Your Non-Towered Airport Ops Skills

With 149 air traffic control towers scheduled to close in the near future, many as early as next week, it may be time for you to brush up on non-towered airport operations. To help in this process, PilotWorkshops has released a free non-towered operations video series that you can view online at your leisure.

“While all of us are trained in these procedures, it’s easy to become rusty if you aren’t using a skill,” said PilotWorkshops founder Mark Robidoux. “We wanted to make this refresher available to all pilots for free in the hopes that it makes flying a bit safer for all of us.”

The series include three videos, each between six and 12 minutes in length for a total of 29 minutes. The format is a PowerPoint presentation with Robidoux interviewing retired FAA Safety Program Manager Bob Martens about special considerations during the preflight, in flight, in the traffic pattern, on the ground and while departing a non-towered airport. The presentation also discusses what to do in unusual situations such as flying at uncontrolled airports with multiple runways. Pictures and diagrams help explain the concepts of the presentation.
