7 Dead, 15 Missing as Planes Collide over Slovakia

Two airplanes carrying as many as 40 parachutists collided over Slovakia today, raining down debris over a forested area as the occupants jumped for their lives. At least seven were killed in the collision while another 15 parachutists remain missing. The rest reportedly jumped from the airplanes during and after the collision.

The Czech-built L-410 twin turboprops collided this morning over mountainous terrain as they were preparing for a formation jump near the village of Cerveny Kamen. The pilots of both airplanes were killed. Five of the parachutist who managed to jump from the stricken planes were injured.

The incident is reminiscent of a collision between two jump planes in 2013 over Superior, Wisconsin, that was caught on video. The nine parachutists and both pilots aboard those planes all survived the accident.
