At about 09:30 eastern time, a Cessna 182P crashed while landing at Angola Airport. The pilot was not injured. The pilot departed Angola to fly to Akron, N.Y., for an annual inspection on the airplane. After he took off, however, the ceiling was lower than he expected so he decided to return. Because the runway was partially covered with ice and snow, he wanted to use all of the available runway. He came in low and struck a snow bank at the approach end of the runway. At 07:20 central time, a Cessna 182 struck trees during takeoff from a private grass airstrip near Victoria. The pilot was not injured. The pilot said the left seat slid back about the time the airplane rotated. Subsequently, the airplane veered off the airstrip and struck trees near the departure end of the runway. The inspector reported that the seat track pin holes were within the manufacturers limits. The pilot said he did not have the safety lock installed on the seat track….

At about 18:15 eastern time, a Cessna 182Q registered to the Civil Air Patrol was damaged in a hard landing at Lakeland-Linder Regional Airport. The pilot reported no injuries. The pilot said she made a normal landing and was holding back pressure on the yoke. During the landing rollout she felt a shudder after the nose wheel touched down on the runway. She assumed she had blown a tire. She informed the control tower that she had blown a tire and rolled to a stop on the side of the runway. At 11:58 central time, a Cessna 182Q crashed after losing engine power during initial climb near Houston. The pilot sustained serious injuries. The flight was a post-maintenance test flight. Witnesses said the airplane was climbing through 300 feet when the engine failed. The pilot attempted to make a steep, 180-degree turn back toward the airport when the airplane stalled and spun into the ground….

At about 18:50 eastern time, a Cessna 182Q ran out of fuel and was damaged during a forced landing near Paintsville. The pilot and passenger were not injured. The pilot said he departed Mount Sterling, Ky., with full fuel and flew 3.0 hours to Paintsville. He did not refuel and departed Paintsville at about 14:30 with a Kentucky Forest Ranger for the purpose of fire spotting. The pilot said he calculated an endurance of 8 hours but had been flying about 5 hours at the economy power setting when the engine lost power….

February 13, Stuart, Fla. / Cessna Skylane

About 18:16 eastern time, a Cessna 182J struck trees on a golf course shortly after takeoff from Witham Field Airport. The pilot and his passenger were killed. The aircraft had performed one touch-and-go landing and remained in the traffic pattern. Witnesses reported hearing the engine miss-firing and making strange backfire or popping sounds. The pilot advised the controller he was landing on the golf course. The controller questioned if the engine was operable and the pilot reported an engine malfunction. The airplane struck a tree 35 feet agl and burned. Investigators were able to get the engine to operate to 2,600 rpm after the crash….

June 16, Oswego, N.Y. / Cessna Skylane

At about 05:55 eastern time, a Cessna 182P crashed into Lake Ontario near Oswego, killing the pilot. The pilot was en route from Holley, N.Y., to Rochester when he buzzed some fishing boats two or three times at low level. During the last low pass the left wing struck the water. A friend of the pilot said the two had flown the airplane late the night before, then went to a nightclub until 03:00. At 04:15 the pilot decided to fly the airplane back to Rochester so it would be there at 8 a.m. The friend added that the pilot buzzed his house at 5 a.m. to make him aware he was on his way back to Rochester….

October 16, Dixie, Idaho / Cessna Skylane

At approximately 21:16 mountain time, the pilot of a Cessna TR182 and his passenger were killed following a loss of control in flight about two miles north of Dixie. The VFR flight had been in the air 3.5 hours, destined for Boise, when the pilot told controllers he had lost his engine. As he executed the forced landing, the airplane crashed into rolling terrain in a sparsely populated area. The landowner had initiated a controlled burn in the area earlier in the day, and there were numerous smoldering areas near the crash site, but there was no post-crash fire….
