At about 09:32 Pacific time, a Cessna 182S crashed into a pond about two miles west of Sonoma County Airport, killing the pilot. The pilot was cleared to make an IFR departure, make a right climbing turn to VFR conditions on top, at which point he planned to cancel IFR. The airplane was climbing through 1,600 feet when the controller advised him the airplanes Mode C was not being received. No further transmissions from the airplane were received. Sept. 22, Tuba City, Ariz. / Cessna Skylane

At about 20:43 mountain time, a Cessna 182 crashed into hills about 1.5 miles northeast of the Tuba City Airport, killing the pilot and passenger. The pilot had volunteered to transport blood to the Tuba City Hospital. According to a courier for the hospital, the airplane was to arrive about 20:35. The courier arrived about 20:25, and about five minutes later the pilot-operated runway lights came on. Within 3 to 5 minutes the courier saw an airplanes lights heading toward the airport. At 08:50 mountain time, a Cessna 182K hit obstructions while landing after a catastrophic engine failure. The pilot suffered minor injuries. The pilot said an inspection of the aircraft revealed a hole in the top of the engine case. The engine had operated about seven hours since overhaul, including two hours in a test cell….

At 13:50 eastern time, a Cessna 182Q crashed during a forced landing in Owingsville; the pilot, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died of injuries he received. The pilot departed Manassas, Va., and was cruising about 30 miles east of Lexington when he contacted Lexington Approach to report he was low fuel and engine sputtering. The pilot transmitted only two calls before radio contact was lost. The airplane crashed adjacent to the westbound lanes of Interstate 64. The airplane showed evidence that it had a fuel leak for some time. Water was drained from the airplanes fuel tanks, fuel lines, carburetor bowl and cylinders. At 10:33 mountain time, a Cessna 182P nosed over during landing rollout on runway 11R at the Tucson International Airport. The pilot and passenger received minor injuries. The tower controller said the airplanes approach looked a little steep. The airplane appeared to have passed over the landing threshold, then it bounced on the runway and porpoised before veering off the runway and nosing over in the dirt shoulder. At approximately 13:30 Pacific time, a Cessna 182H overran the runway while trying to land at Starks Twin Oaks Airport. The pilot and passenger received minor injuries. The pilot said he was having trouble maintaining the correct airspeed in the pattern and executed a go-around on his first attempt to land because he was too high and fast. On his second attempt, he intentionally came in high with partial flaps in case he had to go around again. As he crossed the threshold, he was still a little high and fast, but he elected to continue his attempt to land. At about 19:27 Pacific time, a Cessna TR182 descended into rising hilly terrain about 3.5 nautical miles from Petaluma Municipal Airport, killing the pilot. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed and an instrument flight plan had been filed. The pilot was practicing instrument flying and had made several flights earlier in the day. As the airplane approached Petaluma at 19:23 on the VOR DME runway 29 approach, the radar controller terminated radar services and advised the pilot to change to the airports advisory frequency. At 09:30 mountain time, a Cessna 182P crashed at the 11,000-foot level of Frazier Mountain, 15 miles northeast of Taos. The pilot and his passenger were killed. Witnesses at the Taos ski area said the airplane turned up a canyon across the valley from the ski area and disappeared from view. At about 14:40 central time, a Cessna 182Q crashed in Dixon, killing the pilot. The accident site was located on the pilots brother-in-laws property. The pilots brother-in-law told investigators he heard the airplane buzz the house. It sounded very low at the time. He said the engine was producing power continuously. Investigation of the scene showed the airplane hit near the top of one of two 75-foot-tall trees on a hill about 500 feet from the wreckage….

At 10:30 eastern time, a Cessna 182P flipped over during a crosswind landing on the grass strip at Chalet Suzanne. The four occupants suffered minor injuries. The pilot said he was landing on runway 36 when he experienced a strong crosswind, and the airplane porpoised halfway down the runway.
