Honda Aircraft has notched its biggest order yet, signing a deal with Wijet, a European air-taxi provider, for 16 HondaJets to upgrade its aging business jet fleet. Honda Aircraft made the announcement at the Singapore Airshow being held at Changi Exhibition Centre, where the HondaJet is making its first-ever appearance. Wijet is a French air-taxi […]

Pain in the Aspen

It had to happen one of these times. Today youll fly the approach that makes NetJets pilots wish theyd taken that cargo job over the Great Lakes: the infamous LOC/DME-E into Aspen, CO. Its 3500 feet of localizer stepdowns to a MAP thats still 2.6 miles from the runway. The missed is a climb on dedicated backcourse past hills so dramatic one Citation pilot friend puts it: When we fly into Aspen, I dont look out the window until were about to land. And even then, I dont look up. Many companies require special training to fly paying passengers into Aspen, Eagle, and similar mountain airports.

Stupid Pilot Tricks

Every January we get to snicker up our flight jacket sleeves at the antics of easily distracted pilots with wings, rotors or other means of defying gravity-and logic. While this custom of mocking those whove slipped the surly bonds of sanity and touched the face of chagrin goes back many years, we cling to hope that we will learn from our mistakes. Alas…These exploits are gleaned from NTSB reports from 2014, excluding fatal accidents. So, if you rose from the ashes of what should have killed you that year, youre fair game.

How to Become a Government Pilot

No realm of piloting provides more career opportunities than government, or public service, flying. The Armed Forces, federal agencies, state aeronautics divisions and aviation departments, and county and municipal authorities employ pilots to operate what is by all accounts the world’s largest fleet of fixed- and rotor-wing aircraft and remotely piloted aerial vehicles. The numbers […]

Tamarack has received approval from the FAA, European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) for its ATLAS Active Winglet system’s AFMS (Aircraft Flight Manual Supplement), publicly confirming the performance improvements of the system. The system in question is designed for the Cessna Citation C525 series of bizjets: the CJ, CJ1, […]

Can SmartSky Deliver on its Lofty High-Speed Connectivity Promise?

As my flying routine typically involves cramped middle seats on bargain commercial flights, the thought of actual high-speed Internet at cruising altitude is about as realistic as finding the treasure of Oak Island. So, when SmartSky invited me on a recent flight to test its 4G LTE network over Florida, I was skeptical at best […]

When To Switch Tanks?

In the Top Five Tips and Traps article of the November 2017 issue, I disagree slightly with the statement that once an engine is started, take off on the selected tank and only switch to another one while airborne. The premise is a good one, but I have been in the habit of immediately switching tanks after engine start. My theory being that if the engine started fine on one tank, that tank is probably fine.

Whats Age Got To Do With It?

The FAAs BasicMed alternative to a traditional medical certificate is an attractive option for many pilots, especially those of us who are now senior citizens. However, we should recognize that medical issues are not the only factors affecting our ability to fly as we get older. Even in the absence of pathology, age alters our cognitive processes: how we recognize and interpret situations, decide on courses of actions, manage our workload, remember crucial information and skillfully execute our plans. We may joke about our senior moments, but many of us wonder if our ability to continue flying skillfully and safely is being undermined.

Briefing December 2017

NBAA Expo Focuses On ATC ProposalThe business-aviation world gathered in Las Vegas in October for their annual convention, and topping this years agenda was the fight against efforts in Washington to turn over the FAAs air traffic control services to a private nonprofit corporation. Opponents argue the system would favor the airlines at the expense of business flyers and private pilots. Also at the show, Bombardier brought the new Global 7000 large-cabin corporate jet for the first time, and Cessna displayed the first production-conforming prototype of its super-mid-sized Citation Longitude. Dassault officials said they have a clean-sheet design in the works for a new business jet, but no details yet. Pilatus said it will start deliveries of its PC-24 twinjet this year.
