At 1048 eastern time, a Cessna 172S lost its right wing while maneuvering in the vicinity of Monroe. The flight instructor and student pilot were killed. The flight had originated from Dekalb-Peachtree Airport 15 minutes earlier. A witness said she saw the airplane at about 1,500 feet in straight and level flight but was traveling very fast. She observed the nose pitch to 45 degrees nose-low and the airspeed increase more. At about 0830 Pacific time, a Cessna 172N struck mountains near Ely. The pilot and one passenger were killed. The nearest reporting station, 29 miles from the accident site, was reporting day VFR conditions, but weather at the accident site has not been determined. The operator reported that the pilot was taking a passenger to Little River and planned to return to Rifle the following day. When the flight did not arrive as scheduled, the family alerted the FAA. Authorities received an ELT signal in the vicinity of Ely and rescue personnel located the wreckage two days later in mountainous terrain about 9,000 feet msl. At 1540 Pacific time, a Cessna 172S was damaged during a hard landing at Everett/Snohomish County Airport. Neither pilot was injured. The flight was an IFR instructional flight and an IFR flight plan had been filed. The flight had just executed a missed approach at PAE and when climbing through 1,000 feet the aircraft began picking up ice. The aircraft was cleared for the ILS Runway 16R approach and the pilot reported difficulty maintaining altitude. At about 10-15 feet above the ground, the aircrafts left wing dropped. The pilot said he had just taken off and was climbing through 200 feet, milking the flaps up when he detected that the airplane was sinking. At approximately 0745 Pacific time, a Cessna 172K lost engine power shortly after takeoff from Tacoma Narrows Airport and was damaged in the ensuing forced landing on a road. The airplane struck an automobile on the road, but no one was injured. The pilot was climbing to 3,000 feet on an IFR flight plan when the engine began to surge. He declared an emergency and was vectored for the ILS approach to runway 17. He broke out of the 400- to 900-foot ceiling about 3.5 miles from the airport but could not see it. He could not hold altitude and elected to land on a road, striking the rear of a car that was traveling in the same direction….

At 1440 eastern time, a Cessna 172 crashed into a field when it failed to climb after takeoff from Hampton Roads Airport. The pilot and passenger were not injured. The pilot, a flight instructor, said she had spend 1 hours cleaning snow from the airplane before attempting to take off. She said she cleared the leading edges but decided the snow of top of the wings would blow off during taxi. As the airplane reached 300 feet, however, the stall horn went off and the pilot attempted to return to the airport. During the turn, the airplane landed hard in a field. At 1722 mountain time, a Cessna 172P and a PA-31T collided in midair over Denver. The pilot and two passengers aboard the Cessna and the two pilots aboard the Piper were killed. Six people on the ground suffered minor injuries from falling debris. The Cessna had departed Centennial Airport about 22 minutes earlier, bound for Cheyenne, Wyo. The Piper departed Jeffco Airport about 12 minutes earlier, bound for Centennial. The Piper was flying VFR to the southeast in Class E airspace at 7,800 feet squawking a discrete transponder code and under radar contact, but the airplanes Mode C altitude readout was apparently missing. At approximately 1800 mountain time, a Cessna 172M struck trees during a go-around from an approach to Ute Dam Airport. The pilot and three passengers suffered minor injuries. The pilot said he decided he was too long so he executed a go-around. However, the airplane struck a tree. An examination of the airplane showed the carb heat was pulled on. No other anomalies were found….

At 1345 central time, a Cessna 172M nosed over in a field during a precautionary landing near Vici. The pilot was not injured. The pilot reported that, while flying from Liberal, Kan., to Oklahoma City, he encountered ice throughout the airframe. He made an unscheduled landing at Woodward, Okla. After removing some of the ice, the pilot departed Woodward and again headed for Oklahoma City. He was cruising at 115 mph when he encountered freezing rain. Over the next 20 miles, the pilot observed the indicated airspeed decay progressively to 80 mph. He then initiated a descent to maintain 80 mph and diverted to Vici Municipal Airport. The pilot said he was landing on runway 23 with a crosswind of about 15 knots about 30 degrees right of the runway centerline. The airplane touched down hard and bounced five or six times before he performed a go-around. During the second landing attempt, the pilot experienced difficulty manipulating the airplanes controls. The airplane landed hard, veered off the right side of the runway and struck a snow bank.
