The Aircraft Kit Industry Association (AKIA) has brought on Flying Editor-in-Chief Robert Goyer to serve on its advisory committee. AKIA formed last summer to help promote the kit industry and increase the safety of amateur built airplanes. Goyer will provide advice and counsel on issues that affect the association's growth and the industry's regulatory environment. Other members of the committee include Tom Poberezny, Frank Christensen and Dale Klapmeier.

Goyer's kit industry expertise flourished long before joining Flying 18 years ago. "As many of our readers know, both my aviation and journalistic roots are in recreational aviation, restoration, sport flying and homebuilt aviation," said Goyer. "It is a segment I love deeply and care about greatly." Goyer worked as editor of Sport Pilot and has flown a long list of homebuilt, ultralight, piston and turbine airplanes.

“Robert is a well-balanced aviation writer who brings considerable experience and expertise to the table,” said Dick VanGrunsven, president of AKIA. “We welcome his understanding of the issues facing kitbuilding today and look forward to the benefit of his assistance.”

“I’m honored to have been invited to participate, and I look forward to working with Dick VanGrunsven and the rest of the leadership team at AKIA to help the organization promote its agenda to spread the word about this fun, innovative and exciting segment of aviation to all who will listen,” said Goyer. “It’s a great mission.”

Pia Bergqvist joined FLYING in December 2010. A passionate aviator, Pia started flying in 1999 and quickly obtained her single- and multi-engine commercial, instrument and instructor ratings. After a decade of working in general aviation, Pia has accumulated almost 3,000 hours of flight time in nearly 40 different types of aircraft.
