Operators of most Cessna single-engine models may now install Forward Vision’s infrared thermal imaging camera systems under a Supplemental Type Certificate issued by the FAA. Only Model 208 Caravans and P210s are not included, and Forward Vision is working on acquiring an STC for the latter. At a cost of about $15,000 (uninstalled), the Forward Vision EVS-100/600 system is designed specifically for light aircraft, though the company has systems for business jets, as well. Though they don’t enable lower minimums on instrument approaches, the system is designed to penetrate haze, fog, smoke and precipitation for as much as 10-times the visibility afforded by the naked eye.
