The last Cessna Citation Mustang rolled off the factory floor in Independence, Kansas, nearly two years ago after a decade on the market with nearly 480 airplanes delivered. While the Garmin G1000 system that came installed in the light jet is still highly capable, its upgraded version adds a range of desirable capabilities.

Garmin announced this week that Mustang operators can now upgrade their G1000 systems to NXi – the latest version of the integrated glass panel, which includes features such as wireless cockpit connectivity, split-screen capability, SurfaceWatch, visual approaches, a noticeably quicker processor and a variety of display options on the HSI, such as SafeTaxi, charts, terrain and traffic.

“In 2003, the Citation Mustang was the first aircraft to announce the G1000 integrated flight deck and today we’re excited to offer the next-generation G1000 NXi upgrade to the Mustang – an aircraft that defined the very light jet category,” said Garmin’s vice president of aviation sales and marketing, Carl Wolf.

In addition to quicker processing speeds, the G1000 NXi system has been updated with LED backlighting, which brightens the screen while using less power. The screen is dimmable for low-light conditions.

NXi’s wireless connectivity allows for database updates and the transfer of flight plans from a portable device. Critical information during the flight, such as traffic, weather and attitude data, can also be shared between the panel mounted avionics and the tablet. Options for a Bluetooth audio panel and is also available.

The system does not include ADS-B, so with the upcoming mandate, operators who haven’t already installed the required equipment can choose Garmin’s GTX 33, which includes ADS-B Out only, or the GTX 345, which also includes ADS-B In capabilities.

The G1000 NXi upgrade is available through Textron Aviation’s Service Center network.
