Key Takeaways:

  • The author sought to connect with his WWII naval aviator grandfather's past by finding a surviving F4U Corsair his grandfather had flown.
  • He participated in a warbird flying experience, piloting a T-6/SNJ advanced trainer and performing the same intensive maneuvers his grandfather learned.
  • A remarkable discovery revealed the specific T-6/SNJ he flew was accepted by the Navy at Pensacola (where his grandfather trained) almost exactly when his grandfather was flying that model there, forging a powerful, indirect link to his family's history.

One snowy weekend morning in January, I was casually browsing my grandfather’s World War II logbook, accompanied by a tall mug of coffee.

Watching recently posted YouTube videos of F4U Corsairs being restored planted the seed of an idea. My basic plan was to search the internet for all known Corsair airframes either being flown or displayed in aviation museums. I collected their identification numbers and set about comparing those with the F4U Corsairs my grandfather had flown in WWII.
