WingX Pro Adds New Features

WingX Pro7

Aviation app maker Hilton Software has added several new features with the release of Version 6.9 of WingX Pro7, which is compatible with the iPad, iPad Mini and iPhones running iOS 4, iOS 5 and iOS 6. The new features are included in the subscription, so the update is free for current customers.

One of the changes with Version 6.9 is the capability of picking up ADS-B signals from the recently released Dual XGPS170, which provides the app with GPS positioning as well as ADS-B traffic and weather data via Bluetooth. In addition to the XGPS170, WingX Pro7 is compatible with about 10 other Wi-Fi ADS-B units.

The new version also includes SmartTaxi – taxi diagrams that include the letter designators for each taxiway and show your position on the airport as long as you have a GPS signal. Unlike Garmin’s SafeTaxi, you can’t zoom into an airport on the moving map to access the SmartTaxi diagram. It is a separate airport diagram page in black and white, similar to taxi diagrams on government charts. But to aid with situational awareness on the ground, the runway in use is highlighted in red and runways close to your position are indicated in yellow. A “pencil” feature allows you to make notes and highlight areas of interest on the chart. Another useful safety enhancement is a runway remaining indication. Hilton Software's CEO Hilton Goldstein said further enhancements to SmartTaxi will be introduced soon.

Civil Air Patrol (CAP) pilots will also get some help with the new version of WingX Pro7 as the software is now capable of displaying CAP search and rescue grids, allowing pilots to zero in on target areas more quickly.
