  • The RPA aims to enhance aviation safety by helping to reduce runway incursions, which are a significant concern for the FAA.
  • Pilots can receive audio alerts through Bluetooth or audio-in headsets, and visual alerts appear as on-screen pop-up labels.
  • Other updates in version 4.7 include compatibility with the XPlane simulator software and an updated scratchpad feature.

ForeFlight has added new functionality to version 4.7 of its ForeFlight Mobile aviation app. The big news is the Runway Proximity Advisor (RPA), which allows the app to provide audio and visual alerts to pilots as they approach, enter or cross a runway.

As you approach or enter a runway, a pop-up label that shows which runway you’re approaching or entering appears on the screen. To receive the audio alerts in your headsets, you’ll need either a Bluetooth aviation headset that can link to an iOS device or a headset with an audio-in port.

According to the FAA, an average of three runway incursions occur on a daily basis in the United States and these incidents sometimes cause collisions and fatalities. As a result, a reduction of runway incursions is included in the FAA’s Portfolio of Goals for 2012. ForeFlight hopes that the RPA will aid in that goal.

ForeFlight also announced that Mobile 4.7 is compatible with the XPlane simulator software and that the scratchpad feature has been updated with new features. If you already have ForeFlight installed on your iOS device, you simply need to update the app to get the new features.
