April 3, 2012, Eastover, S.C., Piper PA-28R-200 Arrow

At about 1400 Eastern time, the airplane was substantially damaged during a forced landing at the McEntire Joint National Guard Base (MMT). The private pilot and the passenger were not injured. Visual conditions prevailed. Approximately 25 minutes after takeoff, the engine began to run rough. The pilot reduced power, but engine roughness increased and oil pressure dropped to zero. While attempting to divert to one airport, the pilot saw MMT and decided to divert to it and land on Runway 32.

April 03, 2012, Caribbean Ocean, Hawker Beechcraft C90GTx King Air

The airplane was substantially damaged after ditching in the Caribbean Ocean at about 0920 Atlantic time, 17 miles north of Aruba, following a dual loss of engine power during cruise. The airline transport pilot and his pilot-rated passenger were uninjured. Visual conditions prevailed. On April 2, 2012, the pilots took delivery of the new airplane, then departed for Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (FXE), on the first leg of the delivery flight. During that flight, the pilots diverted to Marianna, Fla., and added 153 gallons of fuel. They then departed for FXE. The next morning, the pilots departed FXE at about 0534. The flight was uneventful until the pilots observed fuel gauges were reading lower than they anticipated.

At about 0742 Mountain time, the airplane impacted terrain shortly after takeoff. The commercial pilot and non-certificated pilot/owner were fatally injured. The airplane was substantially damaged. Visual conditions prevailed. Witnesses reported they heard the engine lose partial power when it was about 200-300 feet agl. The airplane made a sharp right-hand turn, which appeared to the witnesses as if the pilot was attempting to return to the airport, and the airplane’s nose suddenly dropped.

April 4, 2012, Breckenridge, Texas, Grumman F8F-1 Bearcat

The airplane was substantially damaged when it collided with terrain at 1410 Central time during a low-altitude aerobatic maneuver performed shortly after takeoff. A post-impact fire ensued. The commercial pilot was fatally injured. Visual conditions prevailed. The accident pilot reportedly announced over the radio he was going to perform a Half Cuban Eight aerobatic maneuver after takeoff and then overfly the runway in the opposite direction.

April 5, 2012, Ann Arbor, Mich., Remos GX

At 1050 Eastern time, the airplane sustained substantial damage during takeoff. The student pilot was seriously injured. Visual conditions prevailed for the planned solo cross-country flight. The airplane was departing Runway 6 when it veered to the left and went off the runway. The airplane appeared to have cartwheeled before it came to rest upright about 200 feet from the runway.

April 7, 2012, Casper, Wyo., Piper PA-28-181 Archer

The airplane was landed in a field at about 1830 Mountain time following loss of engine power. The student pilot and passenger sustained minor injuries. Visual conditions prevailed. After reaching cruise altitude, the pilot observed a decrease in engine oil pressure. He diverted and a few minutes later, the engine speed began to decrease, with an accompanying engine vibration. The engine eventually lost all power, and the propeller stopped rotating.

April 8, 2012, Salinas, Calif., Extra EA-300

At 0655 Pacific time, the airplane collided with terrain. The commercial pilot and passenger were fatally injured, and the airplane was substantially damaged. Visual conditions prevailed. The flight originated about 0645. A witness observed the airplane perform two chandelles over the foothills north of his house, then the airplane turned south toward the open valley. The airplane performed two aileron rolls and was halfway into a third roll when the nose pitched down, then pitched up and the airplane rolled so that one wing was pointing down.

April 9, 2012, Daytona Beach, Fla., Cessna 172S Skyhawk SP

The airplane was substantially damaged at about 1325 Eastern time during a forced landing following a total loss of engine power. The flight instructor (CFI) and commercial-rated student pilot were not injured. Visual conditions prevailed. According to the CFI, upon reaching 3000 feet MSL, the engine began to run rough and several loud noises were heard. The engine then lost all power, with zero oil pressure and rpm. Oil was visible on the windscreen.

April 12, 2012, Green River, Wyo., Cessna 320D Skyknight

At about 1730 Mountain time, the airplane collided with mountainous terrain following an in-flight breakup and uncontrolled descent. The solo private pilot was fatally injured. Visual conditions prevailed.The wreckage was discovered after the aircraft was reported overdue. The debris field was approximately 0.4 miles in length. Weather in the area during the timeframe of the accident included low clouds and snow showers.

April 19, 2012, Gulf of Mexico, Cessna 421C Golden Eagle

The airplane collided with the water at about 1108 Central time. Visual conditions prevailed for the IFR flight from Louisiana to Florida. The solo private pilot was fatally injured and the airplane received substantial damage. Approximately 20 minutes after levelling at FL 270, the airplane began to deviate from its altitude and route. Military fighter aircraft intercepted the airplane and reported the airplane was circling in a left-hand turn and the windows were partially frosted over.
