Collisions

At about 1330 eastern time, a Cessna 172M, N9840V, and a Cessna 172N, N6101F, collided while in cruise flight near Coral Springs. N9840V was destroyed, and the private-rated student and flight instructor were killed. N6101F incurred substantial damage, and the private-rated dual student and the commercial-rated flight instructor in N6101F were able to make a successful forced landing without injuries. Both flights originated from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport about 45 minutes earlier. At 1325 mountain time, a Piper PA-24-260 encountered a near miss with a Beech 1900D when both attempted to land simultaneously on intersecting runways at Rock Springs-Sweetwater County Airport. The Piper was landing on runway 21 and the Beech was landing on runway 27. The pilot of the Comanche noticed the impending collision and attempted a go-around, but lost control and crashed. The Beech continued its landing roll uneventfully. No one was injured….

At 12:01 CST, a Cessna 172P collided with a Cessna 172M during touchdown at Brainerd-Crow Wing County Regional Airport. The pilot of the 172P stated that he had made a call on the common traffic advisory frequency and did not hear any other traffic in the area. A witness stated that he saw the 172P overtake and land on top of the 172M, which had completed its touchdown on runway 23….

At 11:15 EST, a Pitts S-2B and a Cessna 152 collided on runway 22 at the Easton/Newnam Field Airport. The two occupants of the Pitts were not injured; the two aboard the Cessna reported minor injuries. The Cessna had landed on runway 22 when the Pitts collided with it from behind. A witness who was monitoring the Unicom frequency reported that she heard the Cessna, but she did not recall hearing the Pitts. Another witness, a flight instructor with a student in the pattern behind the Pitts, said that there were several airplanes in the pattern. He heard the Cessna report turning base to final, but he does not recall hearing the Pitts make a radio transmission….

At about 16:30 PST, a Piper J3 struck the elevator and horizontal stabilizer of a Cessna TR182 in the run-up area of the North Las Vegas airport. The Cub sustained minor damage and the Cessna was substantially damaged. The pilots were not injured. The Piper J3 was taxiing into the run-up area and the Cessna TR182 was stationary, conducting pretakeoff checks….

At 11:15 PST, a DeHavilland Tiger Moth DH 82A and a Cessna 152 collided on a taxiway at the Petaluma airport. Both aircraft sustained substantial damage but neither pilot was injured. The pilot of the Tiger Moth told investigators that he had just landed on runway 29 and had turned onto the taxiway. Approximately halfway down the taxiway his aircraft collided with the Cessna, which was being operated by a student pilot. The student pilot stated that he had attempted to raise the other pilot on the radio but received no response….

At 01:33 Alaska standard time, a Boeing 747-400 operated as Asiana Airlines Flight 221 was substantially damaged when it collided with a parked Ilyushin IL-62. The Asiana flight was taxiing to parking after landing at the Anchorage International Airport. The 18 crewmembers and 220 passengers on board the Boeing were not injured. The Ilyushin, being operated by Aeroflot Russian Airlines as Flight 853, contained a crew of 11 and one contract cleaner, who were on board preparing for departure. At about 13:11 EST, a Cessna 172 and a Let L-13 glider collided while on final approach to the Okeechobee County Airport. The Cessna was substantially damaged but the student pilot was not injured. The glider sustained minor damage and the sole occupant was not injured. The Cessna pilot said that he announced his position on the Unicom frequency and entered the traffic pattern on a left downwind for runway 13. At that time he observed the glider aircraft flying southeast. The Cessna then turned left base, announced it on Unicom, then heard the glider pilot announce that he was on a left downwind for runway 13. At 11:53 MST, a Cessna 172P collided with a Cessna TR182 while entering the traffic pattern. The student in the 172 and the licensed student pilot in the 182 were killed, and the flight instructor in the 182 suffered serious injuries. Both aircraft were destroyed. The 172 was returning for landing and the 182 was departing the traffic pattern at the time of the accident….

At about 11:23 EDT, a Beech Baron collided with a Cessna 172K while on final approach to runway 09L at Lakeland-Linder Regional Airport during Sun-n-Fun. Both airplanes were destroyed. The Baron pilot reported minor injuries and the two occupants of the Cessna also reported minor injuries. A witness said Baron did not make the correct entry to downwind or base leg for landing. The Baron flew the downwind leg at about 1,700 feet instead of 1,200 feet and the Cessna was observed on a low final. The Baron cut in front of another airplane and descended toward the Cessna, overtaking it and colliding with the Cessnas vertical stabilizer and the top of the fuselage.
