Nov. 10, St. Augustine, Fla. / Extra 300L and Vans RV-3

An Extra 300L and an amateur-built RV-3 collided in flight while flaring to land at St. Augustine Airport. The Extra suffered minor damage and the RV-3 was substantially damaged. No one was injured. The Extra pilot said he was on a sales demonstration flight with a prospective buyer and announced the flight inbound on the airports Unicom/CTAF, apparently without success. They heard other airplanes announcing their positions in the traffic pattern for runway 2 and made a standard entry into a left downwind at 800 feet behind a Cessna. April 05, Lakeland, Fla. / Piper Clipper and RV-6A

At 1505 eastern time, a Piper PA-16 a Betts RV-6A collided in mid-air while on approach to runway 27R at Lakeland-Linder Regional Airport during Sun n Fun. The Piper pilot was seriously injured and the RV-6 pilot was killed. The local controller said the RV-6 was in front of the PA-16 on the downwind and on base. He saw the PA-16 overtaking the RV-6 and twice instructed the RV-6 to sidestep to runway 27 left, but the pilot did not respond to his instructions. April 06, Lakeland, Fla. / Extra 300 and Navion

At 1554 eastern time, an Extra 300L and a Navion B collided while landing on runway 09 right at Lakeland-Linder Regional Airport during Sun n Fun. The pilot in the Extra and the two occupants of the Navion were uninjured. The Extra pilot said he entered a left downwind for runway 09 right and followed other traffic. He initially saw the Navion ahead of him but, during the landing, landed on top of the Navions left wing….

December 08, New Orleans, La. / Curtiss-Wright Helldiver and Cessna 152

At 15:26 central time, a Curtiss-Wright SB2C struck a Cessna 152 single-engine airplane while taxiing at New Orleans Lakefront Airport. The SB2C, the only flying example of the World War II dive-bomber, sustained minor damage. No one was injured. The pilot of the Cessna reported that she had just landed on runway 36R and exited the runway at taxiway Juliet, where she stopped to perform her after-landing checklist. The pilot of the Helldiver was holding on Juliet on the other side of the runway, waiting for the Cessna to exit. February 13, Glendale, Ariz. / Two Cessna Skyhawks

At 0917 mountain time, a Cessna 172S veered off runway 01 during landing and struck a taxiing Cessna 172N at Glendale Municipal Airport. None of the four occupants of the two airplanes was injured. The pilot of the landing airplane said he completed air work in the local practice area and returned for landing. Upon landing, the airplane bounced, veered to the left, and exited the runway about midfield between a taxiway and the high-speed taxiway. It crossed a gravel area between the runway and a parallel taxiway and struck the oncoming airplane. Each airplanes left wing tip contacted the left wing root of the opposing airplane….
