Pressure At Work

Flying behind air-cooled powerplants, free of radiators or coolant tanks, it’s easy to forget most aircraft still need liquids of some type to operate safely and reliably. When those fluids are put under pressure to actuate a mechanism, we’ve created a hydraulic system, sometimes defined as something “using pressurized fluid to drive machinery or move mechanical components.” It also can be defined as transferring “energy by pressurizing fluid to force movement of a slave to produce the action sought.”

Key Takeaways:

  • Hydraulic systems utilize pressurized fluid to actuate critical aircraft mechanisms, commonly found in personal aircraft for brakes, landing gear, and flaps, and in larger aircraft for primary flight controls.
  • Maintaining system integrity and ensuring it is leak-free is paramount for safe and efficient operation, as pressure loss from deteriorating seals, corroded lines, or worn hoses can lead to system failure, sometimes suddenly.
  • Aircraft hydraulic systems often incorporate redundancy (e.g., reserve fluid, manual pumps, free-fall options) to mitigate failures, but pilots must be intimately familiar with their specific system's intricacies, maintenance, and emergency procedures outlined in the POH/AFM.
