Oshkosh or Bust

Gemini Sparkle

Key Takeaways:

  • The author undertook a two-day "aerial hitchhiking" adventure to Oshkosh's AirVenture, choosing general aviation after a difficult commercial airline experience the previous year.
  • The journey involved flying in eight distinct aircraft, including a B-25 bomber, a Bell 47 helicopter, an open-cockpit Waco biplane, and a floatplane, making multiple stops across several states.
  • The trip highlighted the diverse experiences and community spirit of general aviation, featuring unique moments like landing at a new grass airstrip, a scenic helicopter tour, and even a skydiving excursion.
  • Despite complex logistics and weather challenges requiring rerouting, the author successfully reached Oshkosh, enjoying the adventure far more than commercial travel and arriving two hours quicker.

I made my first trip to Oshkosh in 2007 to unveil the Redbird FMX simulator prototype at AirVenture. That was the start of what would become an annual tradition for me, a pilgrimage north from Austin, Texas, along with 500,000 fellow general aviation disciples, to take part in the “World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration.”
