Key Takeaways:

  • A flight crew successfully managed an in-flight emergency after detecting low oil pressure, leading to an engine shutdown on their Falcon 10 aircraft.
  • The pilots strategically delayed declaring an emergency to ATC to minimize distractions while focusing on checklists and aircraft management, declaring it later for priority landing.
  • The incident, caused by a faulty O-ring, reinforced the importance of disciplined emergency procedures, managing communication with ATC to avoid distractions, and the value of declaring an emergency when specific assistance is needed.

The light on the panel read “OIL1.” It was telling us we had low oil pressure in the left engine. We didn’t believe it. In 14 years of flying our old Falcon 10, we had never seen an oil light come on. We looked down at the oil-pressure gauge to reassure ourselves that there was nothing wrong with the engine.
