All the Right Tools for Setting Up a Flight Sim

Believe it or not, a good setup doesn’t have to be expensive.

I am fortunate enough to go to work and play with some pretty good hardware. Replicating all this in the flight sim world is almost just as much fun with endless possibilities and products to choose from. [Courtesy: Peter James]

Key Takeaways:

  • Flight simulators like MSFS provide valuable real-world training and experience, necessitating a powerful gaming laptop (Intel i7/i9, Nvidia GeForce, G-Sync display) for optimal performance and portability.
  • The author utilizes both a portable setup (Thrustmaster stick/throttle, Xbox controller) for travel and a more immersive home configuration (Honeycomb yoke, rudder pedals) to enhance realism.
  • Modern flight sim hardware is highly customizable and accessible, with interchangeable components (e.g., Honeycomb THQ) and specialized add-ons (like ProDeskSim attachments) allowing users to tailor their setup for various aircraft types and significantly boost immersion.

Over all the years I have been a flight simmer, I have collected a variety of hardware to get the job done. I am quite happy with my assembly of equipment, which allows me to pilot the virtual skies when the craving needs satisfying.

I am fortunate enough to go to work and play with actual flight controls connected by pulleys and cables to a bizjet worth some $20 million. Yet, this career only came after spending the first 20 years of my young adult life behind a computer, seeing the world, learning jet systems, playing the role of airline pilot, and educating myself on everything I could about what a career might be like in this exhilarating world.

Peter is an experienced Part 135 business jet pilot with a passion for simulators and how they blend with the real world. Learning to fly at age 12, he supplemented his passion and career goals with the early versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator. With the growing realism of all PC simulators today, he frequently uses them for extra proficiency, and loves to show other pilots how great they are.
