FAA Administrator Michael Huerta issued an open letter urging general aviation pilots to make a personal commitment to safety during the summer flying season.
This plea is in response to a stagnant fatal accident rate in general aviation over the past five years, despite previous safety improvement efforts.
Huerta's suggestions include understanding personal limitations, using checklists, flying with instructors, paying attention to weather, and fostering a community-wide safety culture.
Long-term solutions involve encouraging the installation of safety equipment in existing aircraft and overhauling training/testing standards to incorporate risk management.
As the busy summer flying season kicks off, the FAA is taking a slightly different approach to safety by asking pilots, well, to fly safely.
In an open letter to the general aviation community sent just before the Memorial Day weekend, FAA Administrator Michael Huerta implored aviators to “make sure you’re ready – really ready – to fly.”
