At 15:57 mountain time, a Beech V35B crashed during its landing approach to Albuquerque International Airport. The passenger was killed in the crash and the pilot died of his injuries two days later. The aircraft was cleared to land on runway 3 but the pilot lined up for landing on runway 35. When the tower pointed this out, he attempted to divert to the intersecting runway 3. Aug. 2, Clarksville, Tenn. / Beech Bonanza

At about 07:00 central time, a Beech A36 struck a tree during a missed approach to runway 35 at Outlaw Field and crashed. The pilot and passenger were seriously injured. The flight had departed Atlanta at 05:30. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed. The pilot said he attempted to land on runway 35, then flew a missed approach. During the maneuver, the left wing clipped a tree, rupturing the fuel tank. The pilot maintained control, declared an emergency, and attempted to divert to Sabre Army Heliport. The engine quit before he got there, however, and the airplane crashed in a heavily wooded area….

At about 10:15 eastern time, a Beech A-36 was damaged during a forced landing at Holmes County Airport. The pilot and two passengers were not injured. The pilot reported the power failure to ATC approximately 6 miles northwest of Millersburg and was given radar vectors. The airplane struck the trees and crashed next to the runway. The right fuel tank was full, the left fuel tank was empty and the fuel selector was set on the left tank….

July 25, Oshkosh, Wis. / Beech Bonanza

At 17:00 central time, a Beech BE-35 struck the runway with its left wing while landing at Wittman Regional Airport. The pilot and passenger were not injured. Special Air Traffic Management landing instructions, which had been issued in a NOTAM, were in effect during the time of the accident. The airplane had made a right downwind pattern and was landing at the Green Spot, located 3,000 feet from the runway threshold on the right side of runway 27. Another airplane, a Velocity, was behind the Beech on final approach, and was instructed to land on the Orange Spot, located 1,500 feet from the runway threshold on the left side of runway 27. Aug. 14, Newberry Springs, Calif. / Beech Bonanza

At about 12:52 Pacific time, a Beech K35 suffered an engine failure in cruise and attempted a forced landing on Interstate 40 near Newberry Springs. The airplane struck three cars, killing the pilot and injuring two occupants of one of the cars, one of them seriously. Examination of the wreckage showed an apparent catastrophic engine failure, with oil on the windshield, belly, empennage and back of the propeller blades….

At 23:15 eastern time, a Beech K35 was damaged during a precautionary landing at the Tulip City Airport, but the pilot was uninjured. The pilot reported that, while in flight, he found that the throttle control would only operate between throttle and full throttle, so he elected to land. He was at a point where he thought he could land, so he shut off the engine and attempted to glide to the airport. The airplane struck the ground about 300 feet short of the runway. An examination of the airplane found that the bolt that attaches the clamp for the throttle cable housing in the engine compartment was loose, limiting the movement of the throttle….

At about 09:54 Pacific time, a Beech 35-B33 crashed into a residential area about 3.3 miles from Gillespie Field, where the flight had been cleared to land. The pilot was killed. The flight was en route from El Cajon to an undetermined destination in Arizona and was cruising at 7,000 feet when the pilot said he needed to return because he was not feeling well. Several witnesses reported observing the airplane descend in a steep bank until it collided with residential property and terrain….

At 22:40, mountain time, a Beech 35-C33 made a gear-up landing at Centennial Airport. The pilot was not injured. The pilot said he had been practicing landings and the tower controller asked him to cut his pattern short. In so doing, the pilot said his habit pattern was broken and he forgot to lower the landing gear….

July 19, Las Vegas, Nev. / Beech Bonanza

At 15:50 Pacific time, a Beech J35 lost engine power and was damaged in a forced landing while in the traffic pattern at McCarran International Airport. The pilot and two passengers were uninjured. The power loss was blamed on fuel starvation. The airplanes main tanks were empty, but the auxiliary tanks were nearly full. The POH for the J35 stipulates that the auxiliary tanks not be used for takeoff and landing. The pilot landed on a dirt road a quarter-mile from the runway threshold….
