On The Air: March 2014

Perhaps the most famous of consecutive fixes is at Portsmouth, New Hampshire and may well be the approach that drew national attention to the occasional TERPS frivolity. The RNAV approach to Runway 16 has fixes of: ITAWT ITAWA PUDYE TTATT-with the missed approach hold at IDEED. Jim HansonAlbert Lea, Minnesota…

Readback: February 2014

Fly the SimThanks very much for the October 2013 “Simplified Circling” article by Dog Brenneman. He mentioned that “we just don’t get a lot of circling practice.”I’ve been regularly flying the Redbird FMX motion simulator to practice circle-to-land maneuvers. I set the ceiling so that tight altitude control is required and adjust visibility, rain, day/night […]

Approach Secrets

In July 2013, we published “GPS Alphabet Soup” covering the five types of GPS approaches in some depth. A reader suggested a follow-on article with a table that gathers all the approach types and their key characteristics in one place. That seemed like a fine idea and it also affords us the opportunity to share […]

XMWX vs. FIS-B Weather

The U.S. pilot population doesnt have a good track record with weather safety. Inadvertent VFR into IMC was responsible for over half of 2010s 55 weather-related accidents, of which 83 percent proved fatal. Projections are for that to get worse. Spring Mountain Storm

Were preparing for our flight from Santa Fe, N.M. and theres been news of an unusually cold late spring storm moving through Colorado. On May 11, of all things, winter storm warnings are already up for Wyoming and much of Colorado. Our bumbling friend Dave called ahead and unfortunately most of the resorts like Aspen and Telluride had already closed for the season (What a waste, he complained.) but we found that Arapahoe Basin is still open. So our quest is to get to Denver.

Terminal Arrival Areas

The Terminal Arrival Area has been dissected and rehashed a lot. For those of us who became instrument rated when, say, Loran was cutting-edge technology, the TAA is a bit of a paradigm shift for approach planning. If you were raised /G, its just another navigation parameter.

Airline-Crash Trifecta

Early July saw a fiery crash of an Asiana B-777. That was followed by Southwests unsuccessful nosewheel landing and a UPS flight hitting the ground. While the NTSB grinds toward its final reports, lessons for us are emerging.

Legal Interpretations

While many of the regulations that govern our actions are clear, there are a large number that may seem vague or even leave room for unintended interpretations. For these reasons, it is possible to seek official and binding interpretations from FAAs legal department, either through a direct request or possibly more onerous encounters with the regulations.
