There is a lot more to being an aviation professional than being a pilot. The Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE) is looking for a few good people to help spread this message.
SAFE was founded in 2009 to elevate aviation education, enhance professionalism, and increase outreach beyond just the instructor community. The mission continues to evolve as the organization has launched the SAFE Ambassador Program.
“SAFE’s new ambassador program will help us shift from what was once a small group of educators to a nationwide group of more than 8,000,” said Peter Dawson, SAFE board member and co-leader of the program. “The significance of in-person connections supports getting more members engaged regionally and building the essential relationships that foster learning and development.”

In addition to pilots and aviation educators, the SAFE ambassador positions are open to all aviation professionals, such as maintenance technicians, air traffic control (ATC), airport operations, engineering, safety investigation, aircraft dispatch and design, meteorology, and human factors. It is hoped that attracting potential ambassadors from these fields will inspire others to pursue these careers.
“Whether supporting our mentor groups or spreading a resource found through SAFE, we recognize the incredible depth of knowledge among our members and want them to share their advanced learning models,” Dawson said. “The vast areas within aviation education continue to be better served by our members who can promote the mission locally, allowing our resources to grow exponentially with ambassador’s engagement.”
Ambassadors’ Mission
SAFE will select six ambassadors for 2026, with a total of 12 serving through 2026-27.
The ambassadors will go through a structured orientation program and have the opportunity to train alongside SAFE leadership at major aviation gatherings such as EAA AirVenture 2026-27 and Sun ’n Fun 2027. Their mission includes:
- Representing SAFE at regional and national events.
- Strengthening local aviation education communities.
- Supporting outreach and mentorship initiatives.
- Serving as visible advocates for SAFE’s core values.
This is not a paid position, although travel expenses will be covered.
To apply, the regional ambassador application is available here.
SAFE Wants to Hear From Members
It is a time of growth for SAFE, so the organization is asking its 8,000-plus members for their opinions on its direction.
The information gathered through this survey will help the organization establish goals and member support initiatives, and create programming for the future.
