Runway incursions are a serious and increasing aviation safety concern, up 15% from FY 2021 to 2022, and are defined as any unauthorized presence on a runway.
They are primarily caused by human error, stemming from communication breakdowns, lack of situational awareness, and expectation bias on the part of pilots and air traffic controllers.
Prevention requires shared responsibility, with pilots and ATC needing to prioritize clear communication, diligent readbacks, maintaining high situational awareness, and not hesitating to clarify instructions or positions.
During a heated conversation have you even crossed the line? Have you been told you did? Assuming so, unpleasant things happen after crossing that line you know shouldn’t be crossed. Same goes for approaching a runway that you shouldn’t be on. The only difference in this case is FSDO and a lot of other people hear about it.
