Key Takeaways:

  • Bessie Coleman was the groundbreaking first African American woman to earn a pilot's certificate (achieved in France in 1921 due to U.S. discrimination) and a renowned barnstormer.
  • She courageously challenged racial segregation by refusing to perform for segregated audiences during her barnstorming career, which was tragically cut short in a 1926 plane crash.
  • Her significant legacy, though often overlooked compared to contemporaries, is actively preserved by her great-niece Gigi Coleman through a one-woman show, educational outreach, and various tributes like stamps and coins, promoting her message of perseverance.

When you ask someone about famous women from the early days of aviation, they will likely mention Amelia Earhart—but rarely Bessie Coleman, the first African American woman to earn a pilot certificate and a renowned barnstormer.

In honor of Black History Month, we remember her with Gigi Coleman—her great niece—who performs a different kind of barnstorming, traveling the country in a one-woman show sharing Bessie’s story. FLYING caught up with Gigi at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.
