Even pros flying hundreds of hours a year slip up once in awhile. Those of us who fly fewer hours, however, clearly have increased odds of doing so. Nevertheless, when you do goof, a request to call ATC doesnt have to become a license altering event if you follow some time-tested advice.
Pilot deviations (PDs), such as altitude/heading busts or airspace violations, are common but most minor incidents can be resolved without severe consequences.
If asked to call ATC after a suspected deviation, always make the call. Take time to review the facts and relevant regulations beforehand, and be prepared to discuss the incident calmly.
During the call, maintaining a respectful, humble, and conciliatory attitude is crucial. Admit fault if appropriate, demonstrate awareness of the rules, and assure ATC that the error will not be repeated.
A good attitude and a willingness to learn significantly increase the chances of a favorable outcome, often preventing the matter from escalating beyond a lesson learned. Submitting a NASA ASRS report is also recommended.
