NextGen is the FAA's extensive, multi-year program to modernize the National Airspace System, aiming for enhanced safety, efficiency, and cost reduction through various technological and procedural updates.
Significant progress is evident with ADS-B deployment for real-time traffic and weather, and the System-Wide Information Management (SWIM) which centralizes aviation data for improved automation and operational benefits.
The FAA is also decommissioning outdated VORs, transitioning towards GPS-centric navigation and routes, while ensuring public input and adequate coverage.
However, the En Route Automation Management (ERAM) system, a core component, is severely behind schedule and over budget, presenting operational challenges and impacting the full integration of other NextGen initiatives.
