The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has initiated an audit of the U.S. civil aviation oversight system, marking the first such probe since 2007.
The two-week review will involve multiple U.S. agencies like the FAA and NTSB, alongside 12 international auditors, examining 790 questions across eight areas of civil aviation, with results due in January.
This audit comes amid ongoing concerns and reported struggles within the FAA, particularly staffing shortages of air traffic controllers linked to a series of near-collisions.
A positive outcome from the audit would allow the U.S. to demonstrate leadership in meeting robust aviation safety standards globally.
