Trump Reverses Course on Bombardier Threats

President previously threatened to decertify company’s jets and ban sales to U.S. customers amid trade tensions with Canada.

Key Takeaways:

  • President Trump has reversed his previous threats against Bombardier, now pledging to "take good care" of the Canadian business jet manufacturer after earlier vowing U.S. sales bans and aircraft decertification.
  • The shift in policy is attributed to Trump's realization of Bombardier's significant U.S. presence, including 3,500 American employees and an extensive supply chain that would be negatively impacted by his proposed actions.
  • Despite previous threats stemming from U.S.-Canada trade disputes, no punitive actions against Bombardier fully materialized, as analysts warned that blocking sales would cause severe economic disruption to American jobs, suppliers, and operators.

In a seeming reversal, President Donald Trump said he intends to “take good care” of Bombardier, the Canadian business jet manufacturer that he threatened with aircraft decertification and a ban on U.S. sales earlier this year.

Trump made the remark to KWCH-TV in Wichita, Kansas, ahead of a midterm campaign rally in nearby Park City. During his speech at the rally, Reuters reported that Trump said he would help a “certain air company get themselves straightened away,” referring to Bombardier.
