The iPad mini is highly recommended for cockpit use due to its significantly smaller size and lighter weight, making it more practical for mounting and less intrusive than full-sized iPads.
While the iPad mini has a lower-resolution display and smaller graphic elements compared to the Retina iPad, its improved form factor for cockpit integration is often considered a worthwhile tradeoff for pilots.
For new tablet users prioritizing cockpit functionality, the mini is a strong recommendation, though considerations for the aviation app ecosystem (e.g., ForeFlight on iOS) and GPS needs are important when comparing to Android alternatives like the Nexus 7.
Despite its advantages, the iPad mini, like other iPads, suffers from high screen glare, making an anti-glare screen protector a necessary accessory for optimal use in the cockpit.
