The author did a good job summarizing the report but should have inserted the report language about the entry to the stall and left out the speculation about the crews actions. It is clear from the video and the report that they were only passengers from the time the cargo broke loose with no ability to control the aircraft trajectory or flight path.

(Self) Restricted IFR

Reader Durocher went on to point out that many countries have varying levels of Instrument certification/licensing. While each level is permitted some IMC flight, only the most advanced levels get the same capabilities the U.S. offers a private pilot with an instrument rating. The idea is to provide basic instrument flight training without the intricacies of departures and approaches, then permit IMC flight only enroute, with VMC-only take-offs and landings.

The national news seldom trains its eye on the FAA. So it was unusual when FAA Administrator Michael Huerta made the news with a speech he gave to the Flight Safety Foundation last October. His speech centered on a newly effective Compliance Philosophy which could represent a sea change for better relations between pilots and the FAA.

IFR Resources

Most of us have a shelf of books chronicling our flying. There are the books we used to learn to fly, obtain instrument and type ratings, and bundles of magazines. In there is probably a dog-eared copy of the Airplane Flying Handbook, and perhaps a few others in the FAAs long-running series of manuals. If you havent used them, or if it has been a while, its worth and a fresh look-especially now that theyre available online directly from the FAA.

So, you can at last afford that glass-panel bird. After flying it across the U.S. to bring it home, its finally time to load the last approach of the trip: The LDA-A into Pearson Field in Vancouver (KVUO). Except the approach isnt in the GPS database.
