Question: Is it possible to learn to fly when you hate the classroom? I was a passenger in a Cessna 120 for half an hour of sightseeing and really enjoyed the experience. I’d like to learn to fly, but sitting in a classroom for ground school does not appeal to me at all. Is there a productive way for me to begin to learn to fly?

Answer: You’re in luck. There have been self-paced interactive ground school options for decades now. You might want to start with Sporty’s Pilot Shop and King Schools as both entities were innovators in the world of video ground schools and now offer courses online. They are thorough and comprehensive and will prepare you for the FAA’s knowledge test as well as the cockpit.

Another fine online course is Gold Seal, which has short videos that can be viewed from a variety of platforms. You could learn and study while waiting for a bus. Other popular options—based on what my clients have used over the years—include ASA, Pilot Institute, and AviatorPro.

Look for a program that fits your budget and allows you to take practice exams.
