All flights must achieve a stabilized approach by 1000 feet above airport elevation in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) or 500 feet in visual meteorological conditions (VMC).
An approach is considered stabilized when specific criteria are met, including maintaining the correct flight path with minimal adjustments, operating within a defined speed range (VREF to VREF + 20 knots), being in the correct landing configuration, and having a sink rate no greater than 1000 feet per minute.
Specific types of approaches, like ILS or circling approaches, have additional stabilization requirements, and unique procedures or deviations from standard elements require special briefings.
Any approach that becomes unstabilized below the specified altitudes (1000 ft IMC or 500 ft VMC) mandates an immediate go-around.
