Flights must achieve a stabilized approach by 1000 feet above airport elevation in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) or 500 feet in visual meteorological conditions (VMC).
An approach is considered stabilized when specific criteria are met, including being on the correct flight path with minimal changes, maintaining speed within VREF to VREF + 20 knots, correct landing configuration, sink rate no greater than 1000 feet per minute, appropriate power setting, and completed briefings/checklists.
Specific approach types, like ILS or circling approaches, have additional stabilization requirements.
Any approach that becomes unstabilized below the mandatory altitudes (1000 ft IMC or 500 ft VMC) requires an immediate go-around.
